Tanning

Tanning equipment produces ultraviolet radiation to mimic the sun and give the user a tan. According to Health Canada there is currently no scientific evidence to show that there is any level of safe or healthy tanning, whether it is from the sun or from a tanning bed. Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause sunburn, eye damage and can increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

It is recommended by Health Canada to avoid the use of tanning equipment, especially if you are under the age of 18. Click here for more information: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/life-vie/tanning-bronzage-eng.php

In the province of Saskatchewan tanning salons are regulated as personal service facilities under The Health Hazard Regulations and the Saskatchewan Personal Service Facility Best Management Practices.  Recently amendments to The Health Hazard Regulations were made.  The following summarizes the changes:

  • restrict the use of tanning beds by persons under the age of 18
  • require proof of age if persons appear to be under the age of 18
  • restrict advertising to persons under the age of 18
  • require the tanning salon to increase awareness of the health effects of tanning via signage
  • have all tanning salons registered with the governing health authority
